Assiterminal, the Italian Association of Port Terminal Operators, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, is the leading association representing the port industry in Italy. It promotes the development of terminal companies and port operators as part of a policy that enhances the national logistics system within a context of globalized dynamics in the transport of goods and people. Its mission is to enhance the sustainability of our companies integrated into the logistics ecosystem, which is one of the main drivers of the economy and employment in Italy.

Assarmatori, a shipowners’ association affiliated with Conftrasporto-Confcommercio, represents Italian, European Union, and third-country shipowners operating regular maritime services in Italy. Other non-shipowning companies and entities operating within the maritime sector are also affiliated with the association, which has offices in Rome, Genoa, and Brussels. Assarmatori, chaired by Stefano Messina, is therefore a qualified and increasingly broad representative of the shipping industry.

Assocostieri, established in Rome in 1983, is the leading association for companies operating in the energy logistics sector. Specifically, the association includes companies active in maritime bunkering, as well as owners of coastal, customs, and tax warehouses for mineral oils, chemical products, and LPG, biodiesel, and LNG regasification storage and terminals. For over 40 years, the Association has represented the interests of sector operators, carrying out continuous and proactive efforts to promote its members and their key issues with relevant stakeholders. To this end, ASSOCOSTIERI safeguards the needs of its member companies in national, EU, and international institutional, political, and technical settings relevant to energy logistics and biofuels.

The Port System Authority of Eastern Sicily coordinates and manages the ports of Augusta, Catania, Syracuse, and Pozzallo. Augusta is a port mainly dedicated to oil and containers, while the ports of Catania and Pozzallo are commercial Ro-Ro ports that also cater to tourism and cruises. The port of Syracuse, on the other hand, is dedicated exclusively to cruises. The Authority coordinates the activities of the ports under its jurisdiction and promotes their competitiveness and integration into the regional, national, and international economic context. The MSOr Port System Authority is currently engaged in technological innovation and digitization projects and has embarked on a strategic path towards sustainable development with numerous structural and environmental redevelopment projects, supported by significant investments.

The jurisdiction of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea (AdSPMLOr) extends to the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara, both overlooking the Ligurian Sea but located in two different regions, Liguria and Tuscany, respectively. The AdSPMLOr headquarters are in La Spezia, with a regional port office in Marina di Carrara. The two ports, which employ thousands of people, are strategic commercial hubs for a large area and home to important tourist, cruise, and recreational boating activities, as well as industrial activities, with international shipyards, and maritime economy, mussel farming, and fishing.

CONFITARMA – Confederazione Italiana Armatori (Italian Shipowners’ Confederation) is the main association representing the Italian shipping industry. For over 120 years, it has brought together and represented Italian shipping companies and shipowners operating in all sectors of freight and passenger transport, cruises, and auxiliary traffic services in their relations with institutions and in the main national, EU, and international forums. Its members also include important industrial and non-shipping associations that are part of the Italian maritime cluster. It is a member of Confindustria and is one of the founders of the Federazione del Mare (Federation of the Sea) and the Istituto Italiano di Navigazione (Italian Institute of Navigation). Internationally, it is a member of ECSA and ICS, as well as BIMCO, INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, IMEC, and collaborates with ILO and IMO.

The Italian Federation of Port Pilots was officially born on March 20, 1947. In the hall of the Library of the Ministry of the Merchant Navy, the National Assembly resolved to establish the Italian Federation among the Port Pilot Corps by electing a Board of Directors and the first President of the Federation in the person of Commander Cesare Rosasco, M.O. for military valor and Chief Pilot of the Port of Genoa. Since then the Federation has been looking after the ethical, moral and economic interests of the category of Italian Pilots and the 32 Pilot Corporations into which they are divided throughout Italy. The Piloti del porto, currently 226 in Fedepiloti, are highly qualified professionals whose task is to assist in the maneuvering of ships as they enter and leave port in the safest and most efficient manner possible. Italy’s Port Pilots perform about 330,000 maneuvers each year, and their main function is to ensure safety within port areas by working alongside ship masters and providing them with their ship maneuvering know-how and port knowledge. The pilot also plays a very important role as an interface between the ship and the maritime authority. Pilotage service is a public service that is provided by pilots 365 days a year H24 and in all weather conditions.

FEDERCHIMICA ASSOGASLIQUIDI is the national association of companies that produce, import, and distribute LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas) for combustion and transportation purposes. These companies are committed to making the investments necessary for the development of the entire liquefied gas supply chain, including its bio and renewable developments: from supply infrastructure to distribution to end users. The Association also includes companies operating in activities related to the above sectors, such as:

  • manufacture of equipment and containers for product use
  • manufacture of transport vehicles and related components design, construction, and maintenance of handling systems
  • maintenance and refurbishment of fixed and mobile containers for storage and transport
  • environmental and safety services
  • transport activities

Assogasliquidi was founded in 1995 to represent the interests of the LPG sector and, since 2013, has also represented companies in the LNG sector. To date, there are 93 member companies.

Fedespedi (Italian Federation of International Freight Forwarding Companies) has been the only business organisation in Italy protecting the interests of international forwarding companies since 1946. The freight forwarding industry gives a key contribution to the Italian logistics industry with a turnover of 33 billion euros per year (2022) and a 2.5% share of the country’s GDP. Fedespedi, founded on 11 June 1946, has its headquarters in Milan and associates more than 1,600 companies (4,700 local units) employing 60,000 people and is part of a vast association network: at national level it is a member of Confetra (Italian General Confederation of Transport and Logistics) and represents international forwarding companies operating in Italy in CLECAT at European level and in FIATA at world level. Fedespedi includes ANAMA (National Association of Air Cargo Agents), ANTEP (National Association of Port Terminal Operators) and FISI (Italian Federation of Industrial Forwarders). The Federation is present across the country through its network of 30 Local Associations.

The National Center for Sustainable Mobility (MOST) is a fundamental pillar in the transformation of the Italian mobility landscape. With an ambitious investment of €378 million in the first three years and a team of 696 dedicated researchers, supported by an additional 574 staff to be hired, it aims to be the hub of innovation in the sector. In line with Mission 4.2 of the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which provides for the creation of five national centers, MOST emerges as a collaborative entity, involving 24 universities, the CNR, and 24 large companies. Its mission is clear: to implement modern, sustainable, and inclusive solutions for the entire country. The project’s areas of interest range from air mobility to rail transport, from the use of light vehicles to the promotion of active mobility. The Center aims to make the mobility system more environmentally friendly and digital by adopting lightweight solutions, electric and hydrogen propulsion, and developing digital systems for transport management and safety. MOST’s goal goes beyond simple research, as it promotes innovation and collaboration between the national and local ecosystems, with an inclusive and market-oriented approach, aiming to be the benchmark for the transformation of the national mobility system.

Spediporto, founded in 1946, is now the largest and most representative Italian association of international maritime shipping companies, and is a leading organization capable of providing qualified support and highly specialized services to its members. Spediporto has 30% of Italian companies and 90% of companies in Liguria as members. Thanks to a typically managerial structure, Spediporto develops, directly and through its subsidiaries. Telematic development for the computerization of port operating processes and interconnection with the PLN through Hub Informatica Srl, freight services through Spediservices Srl, assistance at port gates and gate in/gate out operations through CSP (Consorzio Servizi Portuali), assistance with certified weighing operations to obtain the “verified gross mass” through VGM Srl, fumigation services and assistance with goods control through PQS (Port Quarantine Services SRL). And then there is the development of training courses for companies and individuals thanks to SpediFORM and the GOAS Consortium, created to achieve the goal of a group of associated companies that aim to enhance, increase, and streamline the Genoa cargo sector. On the eve of its 80th anniversary, which will be reached in 2026, Spediporto combines experience with an agile, modern, and young structure to offer increasingly efficient services in step with the times.

USCLAC-UNCDIM-SMACD (Union of Long-Distance Captains in Command / National Union of Chief Engineers / Staff Qualified to Command or Manage Engines) is the maritime workers’ union representing over 600 members nationwide, mainly senior officers on board, such as captains, chief engineers, and officers in general, but not only. The union, founded by seafarers in Genoa in 1967, also has an office in Viareggio, a section dedicated to recreational boating, is associated with FEDERMANAGER and CESMA-Confederation of European Shipmasters’ Associations and, through CASCODI – Cassa Assistenza Comandanti e Direttori di Macchina (Assistance Fund for Captains and Chief Engineers), has been a partner of Shipping Week for several editions.

Vado Gateway is a modern port system serving shipping companies and logistics operators. The infrastructure, located in Vado Ligure, includes the new deep sea Container Terminal – one of the most technologically advanced port infrastructures in the Mediterranean and the only one in the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea with a depth of up to 17.25 meters, capable of accommodating and operating without limitations even the latest generation of large ships (ULCS – Ultra Large Container Ships) – and the adjacent Reefer Terminal, the largest hub in the Mediterranean for fruit logistics, which can also accommodate dry containers dedicated to the transport of goods that do not require temperature control. With a current average intermodal share of 33%, the Vado Gateway port system aims to achieve and exceed 40% rail transport. The total number of TEUs handled in 2024 within the two Vado terminals was approximately 390,000 (+8.3% on 2023), of which 34% were exports, 32% imports, and 34% transhipments.
