New frontiers in green shipping technologies
Part 1. Decarbonization and energy efficiency
Decarbonization and the general reduction of the environmental impact of maritime logistics are likely the main drivers of fleet development for large, specialized shipowners. This means not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the “funnel level,” but also lowering energy consumption at the propeller, wet hull and superstructure levels. The need to leave less and less trace of a ship’s passage is also important, from onboard waste management to ballast water. The same applies, with different parameters, at the port level, where the impact is felt and requires interventions especially in “urban ports,” which comprise the vast majority of Italian ports.
Main topics:
- The evolution of the rules and the IMO timelines
- European taxonomies and classification of technological clusters
- European objectives for carbon neutrality
- Decarbonization: which technological paths in the short and medium term
- Wind as a propulsion system
- Non-propulsion solutions for energy efficiency
- The ship as an energy system
