Intelligent shipping: AI, automation, telecoms, navigation
The maritime sector is experiencing the introduction of advanced technologies that have and will have a revolutionary impact comparable to that of radar and satellite navigation. Causally, doubts about the medium-term reliability of these systems, especially in areas of intense traffic, that often coincide with war zones or instability, are giving rise to innovations in navigation technology, such as the return of ground-based aids, but also highly sophisticated inertial systems and the secondary use of low-altitude satellite constellations. Automation is transforming into robotics, and with the advent of AI and digital twins, the number of seafarers required to operate a merchant vessel could be further reduced. It is important to note that a self-defense component, including human-based ones, will likely become increasingly widespread, as well as dedicated, highly persistent platforms for maritime surveillance.
Main topics:
- Are GNSSes still reliable? Remedies and alternatives
- Maritime autonomous systems, not only navigation and cruise control
- Ship Digital twins
- Anti-drone and self-defense systems for merchant vessels
- Space and near-space and the sea: telecoms, surveillance, control
